Let’s talk about: Inhale

Beauty

Sensual portrait of beautiful young blond woman

Inhale by Kendall Grey is the first book in the Just Breathe trilogy. How to describe this novel? It’s a paranormal that ties the elements to real world Australia. The main character is a whale biologist and the book is chock full of details about whales and the character’s whale tagging project and her co-workers. Obviously Kendall knows what she’s talking about.

And everyone is hot. And the sex is scorching. Like, seriously scorching.

I’ve read several of Kendall’s books, including several of the Just Breathe ephemera (shorts related to the series), and she really knows how to write sex. It’s the kind of book you’re glad you’re reading digitally so no one knows why your face is red and you’re sweating and possibly even fanning yourself.

Then again, knowing what the pages hold, you probably wouldn’t read it in public.

Let’s Talk About: Act Like It

I first heard about this book from the Smart Bitches, Trashy Books blog. Everyone was raving about it. Raving. They looooooved it.

act like it_cover

Darn right, they loved it. This book is amazing! Admittedly, the fake relationship trope isn’t usually my thing, but ohmygoodness, none of that mattered in Act Like It. Parker’s characters carry the story to the point where they could have gotten up to any kind of plot hole-ridden crazysauce and I would not have cared in the slightest. I got a very Pride and Prejudice-esque vibe for some reason–maybe the banter between the hero and heroine, maybe because I so loved watching the hero’s growth and change for the better, maybe because the ending was so wholly satisfying. Whatever the reason, I’ll definitely be re-reading this one!

Let’s Talk About: All In My Head

30826236

All In My Head by Kristen James was a lucky find. I discovered it on Amazon by chance, and the summary grabbed my attention right away. It’s a contemporary romance with a twist.

The main character, Avery, wakes up after an accident and discovers that she can hear a male voice in her head. The voice belongs to someone named Marcus. They have their differences at first, but as they grow to care about each other, it becomes more and more complicated. How do you have a relationship with someone who’s in your head, if he’s even real?

Ms. James pulled off this unique plot well, and she got me to care about her characters’ lives and well being. She combines the things I love most about one of my favorite genres (contemporary romance) with unconventional additions that make the story that more exciting.

Have you read any books by Kristen James? Or any other clever books that set themselves apart from their genre?

Let’s talk about: Trial by Desire

Trial by desire Milan

Trial by Desire by Courtney Milan is actually book 2 in the Carhart series. I didn’t read book 1 and I didn’t feel like I was missing anything. Lord and Lady Carhart have been separated (by oceans and continents) since their wedding years before. Each is hiding a major secret from the other. Each is wildly attracted to the other but afraid to get close.

Their chemistry is red hot, the sex scenes were so fulfilling (except when they weren’t meant to be).

This was actually my intro book to Milan’s historical romances and I will absolutely read more!

Let’s Talk About: New Dawn

The author of the Hart and Soul series, Liberty Gilmore, has been giving me ARCs in exchange for reviews, and I feel really really lucky at the moment, because the third book, New Dawn, was absolutely gripping. You might even notice a cover blurb from moi.

Trigger warnings for rape (mentioned after the fact–not shown) and abuse. Feel free to shoot me a message in the comments or through Twitter if you want more details to help decide whether this book is right for you.

So I’ve been invested in the Hart and Soul series from the very beginning, but I really have to rave about this third installment. The mystery had me flipping pages just as fast as possible, and I loved seeing the Cadence, main character’s, backstory expanded upon. I’d loved that hint of her past in the second book, Soul Rights, and seeing it again here made my reader’s heart so very very happy! Cadence comes off as even more genuine and likable, while still being a tad prickly and standoffish–and I wouldn’t ask her to be any other way. Above all, I really am enjoying the building friendship between Cadence and Matthew. While I can’t call this series a romance quite yet, the potential is there, and even if it never quite happens, I’m still on board.

This book is a bit darker than what I usually gravitate toward, but I was invested in the mystery–the heartwrenching struggles with faith and murder and rape had me glued to the page. Although the mystery was solved, I was still left with feelings that something bigger is yet to come, so I will be eagerly awaiting the fourth book!

New Dawn is available on Amazon, although I suggest starting with Book 1, New Dusk.

(Note: I posted an earlier version of this review on Goodreads.)

Let’s talk about: Wild Invitation

Wild invitation Singh

Wild Invitation by Nalini Singh was my first introduction to the wonderful Ms. Singh’s work. It’s a collection of four stories, two that hadn’t previously been published, all set in her Psy-Changeling world. All are about Changelings, or shifters as the rest of us call them, and the Psy are only briefly mentioned.

I haven’t yet read any of the novels about Psy. I look forward to learning more about how they manage relationships. Or if they do.

So, have you read any of the stories contained in this book? Or, what’s your favorite Nalini Singh book? Let’s chat!
